Net rated capacity: added and withdrawn capacity of conventional power plants

Added and withdrawn installed net rated capacity of conventional power plants until 2027

As part of its monitoring activities, the Bundesnetzagentur also collects data on the prospective addition and withdrawal of conventional power generation units with a net nominal capacity of at least 10 MW per location.

Owing to the plants' importance to security of supply, the Bundesnetzagentur also publishes key data on:

  • conventional power plants in trial operation or under construction;
  • expected closures of conventional power plants up to the end of 2027 (notified final closures in accordance with section 13b EnWG);
  • lignite-fired power plants with a net rated capacity of at least 150 MW that are scheduled for closure in accordance with the KVBG;
  • hard coal-fired power plants and small lignite-fired power plants that are scheduled for closure or conversion as a result of tendering to reduce coal-fired electricity generation according to the KVBG reduction path;
  • expected closure upon completion of designated system relevance;
  • further power plants using non-intermittend sources without scheduled for closure.

Under construction/in trial operation

2.7 GW

Expected capacity closures up to the end of 2027

4.7 GW

  • Notified final closures

0.1 GW

  • Lignite-fired power plant closures under the KVBG

0.3 GW

  • Plants with coal-fired electricity mintermarketing bans from the fifth, sixth and seventh tendering process under the KVBG* and power plant closures after reentering the market

0.1 GW

  • Expected closure upon completion of designated system relevance

2.4 GW

  • Further power plants using non-intermittend sources without scheduled for closure

0.8 GW

It should be noted that the figures are subject to a degree of uncertainty. Among other things, ending coal-fired electricity generation at a plant does not necessarily mean that all the plant's capacity will be removed from the market since plant operators can convert (or in some cases have already converted) their plants to other energy sources.

Note: All values are provisional. They were queried as at the reporting date of 21.11.2024.
