As part of its monitoring activities, the Bundesnetzagentur also collects data on the prospective addition and withdrawal of conventional power generation units with a net nominal capacity of at least 10 MW per location.

Owing to the plants' importance to security of supply, the Bundesnetzagentur also publishes key data on:

  • conventional power plants in trial operation or under construction;
  • expected closures of conventional power plants up to the end of 2026 (notified final closures in accordance with section 13b EnWG);
  • lignite-fired power plants with a net rated capacity of at least 150 MW that are scheduled for closure in accordance with the KVBG;
  • hard coal-fired power plants and small lignite-fired power plants that are scheduled for closure or conversion as a result of tendering to reduce coal-fired electricity generation according to the KVBG reduction path;

Under construction/in trial operation

1,559 MW

Expected capacity closures up to the end of 2026

4,354 MW

  • of which are notified final closures

866 MW

  • of which lignite-fired power plant closures according to the KVBG reduction path

321 MW

  • of which plants with coal-fired electricity marketing bans from the fifth,
    sixth and seventh tendering process under the KVBG

3,167 MW

It should be noted that the figures are subject to a degree of uncertainty. Among other things, ending coal-fired electricity generation at a plant does not necessarily mean that all the plant's capacity will be removed from the market since plant operators can convert (or in some cases have already converted) their plants to other energy sources.

Note: All values are provisional. They were queried as at the reporting date of 15.04.2024.
