Consumer price indices fall

-

The price indices for new electricity and gas customers fell in October.

There was a slight decrease in October in the household customer price indices for both electricity and gas. The electricity price index for new customers stands at 106.5 points, 2.7 points lower than the previous month's figure. This means that the electricity price for new customers is just 6.5 percentage points above pre-crisis levels. The gas price index for new customers fell by 4.5 points to 170.2 points. The gas price is therefore still 70.2 percentage points higher than pre-crisis levels.

The electricity price index for existing customers fell by 3.8 points to 120.7, while the gas price index saw an even larger fall of 5.3 points to 180.

Since September, indices showing the trends in electricity and gas prices for household customers have been available on the SMARD website. The indices show the relation between current prices for new and existing customers and prices in January 2021.

What is special about these consumer price indices is that they show the expected prices for the coming month at the beginning of each month. This enables consumers to find out early on whether it might make sense to switch supplier.

The consumer price indices can be found in the "Energy data compact" section and are updated each month.
